Metro announced early Monday the suspension of rail service between Farragut North Station and Van Ness Station at the beginning of the work week.
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), says they have shuttle buses ready in case of a weekend shutdown at multiple stations along Red Line.
WMATA stated that crews worked overnight to repair and restore service between Farragut North, Van Ness but could not resolve the problem before Monday's rush.
Metro tweeted Sunday night: "In the unlikely event of any problems, we'll be having at least 40 shuttle busses ready to operate every seven-10 minutes."
Red Line commuters heading toward Shady Grove Sunday faced delays and station closings after service began to disintegrate Saturday night due to issues at Dupont Metro Station.
The wait times for the Red Line could reach 20 minutes at 1:30 PM Sunday. They were reduced to 10 minutes hours later. Bus service operated every 7-10 minutes between Van Ness and Farragut North.
According to the statement, sparks and smoke activity were reported from a train operator.
Investigations have revealed that a low-voltage cable was damaged by an electrical fire and that this caused damage to adjacent cables.
